Can You Use Hot Sauce For A Sore Throat?

We've all been there and none of us like it, that scratchy feeling at the back of your throat that signals the onset of a... sore throat. It can be a real nuisance and even painful, especially when eating, swallowing, or talking. While it can be tempting to reach for over-the-counter remedies or pharmaceutical drugs, some people prefer to use natural or home remedies to alleviate symptoms.

Which is why we would like to introduce you to a lesser-known option: hot sauce. This fiery condiment is often used to add flavor and heat to meals, but can hot sauce be used as a remedy for sore throat?

Let's find out.

Does Hot Sauce Help With A Sore Throat?

Before diving into the effectiveness of hot sauce as a sore throat home remedy, let's first understand what causes sore throat. A sore throat can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection, allergies, dry air, or even voice strain. The inflammation and irritation of the throat can cause pain, discomfort, and difficulty swallowing.

Hot sauce contains capsaicin, a compound found in chili peppers that gives them their intense heat. Capsaicin has been found to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. When consumed, according to medical studies, capsaicin can help reduce inflammation.

But, does it actually work? The answer is YES! Even though hot sauce can cause a temporary "burning sensation" in your throat, the heat aids in alleviating that sore throat feeling (Including reducing throat irritation and soreness).

Additionally, the capsaicin found in hot sauce helps to trigger the release of endorphins, which aid in masking pain and providing an instant soothing effect.

How To Use Hot Sauce For A Sore Throat

So, what's the best way to use hot sauce for a sore throat? You have two different options:

  1. Mix a few drops of your favorite hot sauce in a cup of warm water. Gargle the mixture and spit it out. Repeat every few hours as needed.

  2. Another way to use hot sauce for sore throat relief is to add a few drops to your favorite soup or broth (or really any food you're craving).

It is important to note that hot sauce won't cure a sore throat, and the relief may be temporary. Sort of like taking an over-the-counter medicine to bring some relief. It is also essential not to overdo it as too much heat can cause more harm than good. However, unlike traditional sore throat remedies, hot sauce is not full of unhealthy ingredients. It is affordable, natural, and tasty!

Are There Any Risks to Using Hot Sauce for A Sore Throat

There aren't any real risks, after all, hot sauce is a condiment that is supposed to be ingested. Believe it to not, eating hot sauce and spicy food can be good for your health. For some though, if you don't have a high tolerance, it can be a bit uncomfortable.

And of course, you'll experience the normal burning sensation on your tongue, lips, and throat that comes with anything that you eat that is spicy.

Are You Going to Try It?

Using hot sauce for a sore throat is an effective and natural remedy that can provide temporary relief. The capsaicin in hot sauce can help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and provide a soothing sensation to the throat. So, next time you have a sore throat, are you going to try soothing it with some hot sauce?

I stopped using over the counter remedies a long time ago. I usually just squeeze a few Taco Bell Diablo sauce packs or a shot glass of hot sauce. Nothing has ever worked better.
